“If you don’t value your own work, neither will anyone else.”
I know a lot of people with internships are gonna debate this one, and unpaid internships are definitely in that grey area, but at the very least, when you’re not in school, and you’re trying to be a professional, don’t do everything for free. It doesn’t just devalue you, but the entire industry, teaching clients that not only do you not need to pay this artist, but so many other artists. With an art world like that, why even consider an artist who asks for payment?
So very true. No one gets up the career ladder on unpaid work. It took me a couple of years and a lot of free work/borked ‘portfolio-filler’ projects to calculate my efforts and demand pay for everything I do.
